How to Check if Ereada Mat Heats Well?
To check whether your mat is heating correctly and evenly, please follow the steps below:
First, preheat the mat and cover it with a blanket for about 30 minutes. Then remove the cover and immediately measure the temperature directly on the mat surface.
Compare the upper third, middle, and lower third of the mat (excluding the edge tubes and crystals). If the temperature difference is within 10–15°F (5–8°C), this is considered normal.
Please note that the temperature may appear higher immediately after uncovering the mat. It will naturally decrease within a few minutes or increase again if you cover the mat or lie on it. This fluctuation is normal and occurs because the crystals radiate heat rather than store it.
There is also an additional method to test the heating performance and power of the mat. However, this test should not be performed frequently, as it may put extra strain on the heating system and sensors.
A. Place the 3D air-mesh protector and a blanket over the mat, then set it to the maximum temperature and preheat for about 1 hour.
B. Remove the cover and place a thick, non-permeable pillow (such as an amethyst pillow or foam pillow) on the mat. Leave it for 30 minutes to block heat dissipation.
C. Remove the pillow and immediately measure the temperature underneath it and in the surrounding uncovered areas.
Under the pillow, the temperature may reach approximately 140–160°F (60–65°C), while uncovered areas may be around 100–120°F (40–50°C). This difference is normal.
Some customers initially feel that the mat is not hot enough, but after regular use, they may find it too warm and begin using lower temperature settings. This is because FIR (Far Infrared) heat works differently from conventional heating pads.
The temperature shown on the controller reflects the internal heating elements, not the surface temperature. The surface remains cooler because the crystals emit heat as infrared radiation rather than retaining it.
Typically, a properly covered mat should reach its maximum temperature within one hour, unless the room is very cold.
In colder or drafty environments, the surface temperature may remain around 100–110°F (40–45°C). However, if you cover the mat again or lie on it for 15–20 minutes and then measure immediately, the temperature should rise to approximately 120–140°F (50–60°C) before gradually decreasing again.
It is normal for the edges and end crystal tubes to feel cooler at first. The heating elements are positioned slightly away from the edges for safety, so these areas are heated indirectly. With longer heating time, the temperature across the mat becomes more uniform.
FIR gemstone mats provide deep, penetrating heat and should be used at lower perceived temperatures compared to standard heating devices.
Larger mats, in particular, can be very powerful and may cause overheating or discomfort if used excessively. Smaller mats (Mini and Midsize) are generally safer for localized use.
Please note that the body does not always immediately recognize radiant heat. Even if the mat does not feel very hot, it can still produce strong warming effects, including sweating after extended use.
For stronger heating effect, you may remove the thick 3D protector and use a thinner cover. The thicker protector can reduce heat transfer by approximately 20–30%, but it is recommended for longer sessions or sleep use for added comfort.
If, after proper preheating, the mat remains significantly cooler in certain areas or only heats in the middle, this may indicate a sensor issue.
Additionally, if the “pillow test” shows no significant temperature difference between covered and uncovered areas (e.g., both around 100–110°F / 40–45°C), this may also indicate a malfunction.
In such cases, please let us know, and we will assist you with arranging a controller replacement.
